FAQ

What age patients do you examine?

Dr. Cara’s practice is limited to patients from 6 months to 19 years of age for routine eye examinations. Specialized examinations are performed on patients of any age interested in treatment for lazy eye, eye coordination problems, sport enhancement, or post-concussion treatment options.

Do you examine children with disabilities? ?

Children of all ability levels are welcome at Dublin Vision Development. Dr. Cara’s exam techniques adapt to the communication and attention preferences of her patients. Families are encouraged to bring favorite toys, movies or snacks the child enjoys and could be incorporated into the exam.

Who can perform vision therapy?

Under Ohio Revised Code 4725.01, only an individual licensed as an optometrist in Ohio can practice vision therapy and/or vision training. Optometrists are trained to use lenses, evaluate the visual system and create a treatment plan to improve specific dysfunctions of the visual system, including strabismus, amblyopia, and other deficiencies in binocularity, accommodation, ocular motor function, and visual-perceptual-motor abilities. Once a treatment plan is formulated by the licensed optometrist, the doctor may delegate implementation of the plan.

Official Ohio legislation on the topic is provided here.

My child passes a vision screening, do they still need an eye exam?

Yes! Screening vision by identifying letters at the distance detects those children that cannot see the classroom board. Unfortunately 40-60% of children with other significant vision problems can pass this test and photographic screening.

Do you sell glasses for children?

Yes! We offer eye wear for our pediatric and teenage patients. Patients referred for vision therapy should consult with their primary care optometrist for all eye wear needs.

  • All eye wear has a 1 year warranty

  • Adjustments are always at no additional cost, just call ahead

What medical insurance do you take?

We are credentialed for in-network provider status with:

  1. Anthem/BCBS - approved 9/26/2019

  2. Medical Mutual of Ohio - approved 12/3/19

  3. Ohio Healthy - approved 11/9/20

Unfortunately most medical insurance plans (Aetna, United Health Care, Ohio State Health Plan) are closed to new optometry providers in Franklin County.

We contact and appeal this decision repeatedly and have been denied the opportunity to join the networks. We will submit claims on your behalf or we will provide receipts to patients with other insurance coverage to submit for reimbursement.

When should my child have an eye exam?

The American Optometric Association recommends all children be examined between 6-12 months, between 3-5 years and annually for school age children. Routine care is necessary to monitor the visual system as it develops.

Does insurance cover vision therapy?

Vision therapy sessions are submit to medical not vision insurance. Medical plans may have limitations on coverage for therapy. Each family’s plan and the eye problems diagnosed affect coverage. Convergence insufficiency is more frequently covered than visual processing or tracking problems, which are considered ‘educational’.

Do you accept vision insurance?

We are credentialed for in-network provider status with:

  1. Spectera/UHC Vision - approved 7/6/2020

Our office is an open access provider with all other companies. This means we work with your vision or medical insurance to submit a claim on your behalf. Your vision plan contributes a portion to the total expense, but your out of pocket might be a bit more. This allows Dr. Cara to provide thorough care and for Dublin Vision Development to use high quality materials and the lab of our choice.
